Abstract: This study aimed to compare the stability limits of standing balance control between Ving Tsun (VT) practitioners and non-practitioners. Four male VT practitioners (mean age ± standard deviation = 26.3 ± 5.0 years) and 4 healthy active male adults (mean age ± standard deviation = 21.5 ± 2.4 years) as controls participated in the study. Balance ability, specifically limits of stability (LOS) in standing, was assessed using the LOS test. Outcome measures included reaction time, movement velocity, maximum excursion, end-point excursion and directional control in the forward, backward, right and left directions. Results revealed that VT practitioners had lower LOS maximum excursion scores in the backward direction (17.6% lower, p = 0.020), and lower directional control scores in both the backward direction (8.6% lower, p = 0.042) and to the right side (7.7% lower, p = 0.043) compared to the controls. No significant between-group differences in other outcome variables were found (p > 0.05). VT practitioners showed inferior LOS balance performance in standing compared to non-practitioners in general, except that they seemed to have better maximum excursion in the forward direction (effect size = 0.951). Further randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract: This study was intended to apply statistical analysis to determine adult nutritional status and cigarette smoking in Kaura and Jama’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria. Four (4) major towns were selected purposively within the two LGA’s namely Kafanchan, Manchok, Kaura and Kagoro respectively. Fifty 50 questionnaires were administered in each of the four selected towns in the study area, making a total of 200 questionnaires in all. Their dietary habit, food consumption, height and weight of the subjects were taken to determine the Body Mass Index (BMI). The result showed that there is correlation between quantity of cigarette consumed and nutritional status (P < 0.05). The result of the food frequency indicated that smokers consumed less fruit and vegetables, less meat and milk product respectively, however consumption of cereal is high (51%). The BMI revealed that 42% of subjects were undernourished. Most of this subject has smoking related diseases such as decrease in lung function, increase of heart attack, Respiratory diseases, asthma, and other health effects as a result of their smoking habits. Inference derived from this recommence that all form of advertisement and promotional activities of cigarette should be banned and health education on the risk should be encouraged to minimize cigarette smoking most especially among bachelors.

Abstract: Background: Since rehabilitation practice focuses on working in multidisciplinary teams to optimize the physical, psychological, and social outcomes of the patient, conceptual models are extremely important in providing a theoretical basis for advancing scientific knowledge and improving professional practice. Aim: Although rehabilitation-related conceptual models have appeared in the literature more than fifty years ago or so, there has been no systematic efforts to review them. The purpose of this paper is to explore the existing rehabilitation models and to link these models to the ICF model of the World Health Organization. Methods: A structured literature search was performed in different databases including Medline and PubMed using terms such as: “rehabilitation” AND “Model” OR “Framework” OR “conceptualization”. 43 citations were identified and further evaluated by two judges according to pre-defined inclusion/exclusion criteria. Results: Six conceptual rehabilitation models were identified in the literature: the Biomedical Model, the Social Model, the Bio-Psycho-Social Model (BPS), the International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps Model (ICIDH), the Community Based Rehabilitation Model (CBR), and the Health-Related Quality of Life Model (HRQoL). The concepts on which the models are built were linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) domains. The strengths and limitations of each model are discussed. The majority of the concepts from the six models could be linked to the ICF model. Conclusion: By applying the conceptual models, an additional perspective can be added by rehabilitation therapists to multidisciplinary teams that use the ICF model. When relationships are highly complex, as they are in rehabilitation processes, it is challenging to develop models that are applied in different contexts. However, it is possible to establish relationships between different variables that are observable.
